Celebrating Welsh Tourism Week, YHA have announced 11 job vacancies at its 24-strong network of youth hostels in Wales.
The new jobs follow the full re-opening of our network in Wales after the lifting of Covid restrictions on 28th March. As well as bedroom accommodation, all social spaces, including self-catering kitchens, games rooms and shared WCs, in youth hostels are now fully re-open.
The re-opening of all youth hostels in Wales following the closure during the pandemic, has been supported by more than £268,000 of grant funding from Wales Third Sector Resilience Fund, Wales Economic Recovery Fund and the Moondance Foundation, which supports organisations that have a transformational impact in their communities in Wales and beyond.
The reopening of our Welsh hostels will boost our recovery from the impact of the pandemic which saw all its properties close across Wales completely for five months leading to a 64% drop in income.
Seven of the job vacancies are seasonal positions which are ideal for young people looking to gain work experience in the tourism sector.
As well as seasonal jobs, there are also a number of permanent roles up for grabs including the hostel manager position at our five-star hostel YHA Snowdon Pen-Y-Pass located within Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park.
James Blake, our Chief Executive, said: “The forced closure of rooms, social spaces and communal kitchens at the height of the pandemic meant, for the first time in YHA’s history we were encouraging people not to be social. The grant funding from Wales Third Sector Resilience Fund, Wales Economic Recovery Fund and the Moondance Foundation, has enabled us once again, to fully return to our original purpose of providing affordable places to stay to connect with people, the outdoors and heritage.”
He added: “We’re immensely gratefully to the funders for their support during what has been the most challenging financial period in YHA’s 92-year history.”
We hope to create more job opportunities in the nation’s capital where the youth charity is currently searching for premises from which to locate a Cardiff youth hostel.
Our previous Cardiff youth hostel, based on East Tyndall Street, was one of a number of properties which we licensed to local councils temporarily to support the most vulnerable and keep people safe during the pandemic.
After becoming an integral part of Cardiff Council’s ‘No Going Back’ approach to the delivery of homelessness services in the city and its Covid recovery strategy, we agreed to transfer ownership of its East Tyndall Street youth hostel to the city council in 2021. We have since been searching for a new home in Cardiff.
Mr Blake explained: “Transferring the ownership of our East Tyndall Street youth hostel to Cardiff Council was beneficial for everyone. It gives us the opportunity to find a new home in a more central part of the capital, which will make the rich culture and heritage of Cardiff more easily accessible to the thousands of guests who stay with us each year.”
