What is a wood burning stove?

A wood burning stove does what it says on the tin – it is a metal box which burns wood to keep you warm! Building the fire is simple – just add logs and kindling, light the firelighters, open the vents and then shut the door to heat things up.

If you stay in one of YHA’s glamping pods or tents with a wood burning stove then you get one free bag of wood provided for you when you arrive. If you need more, just head to reception, where you can purchase additional bags.

Benefits of glamping with a wood burning stove

The Lakes is known for its wild and wonderful weather, even during the summer months. Of course, this means that the main benefit of glamping with a wood burning stove is that you can keep warm and cosy, whatever the weather, after a day of exploring the fells and lakes in the Lake District.

Not only can you warm yourself up, but you can also dry out your gear. If you’ve been caught out in showers on the fells, just hang up your wet clothes and pop your boots near the stove, and your stuff will be dry in no time. Fancy a cuppa? There’s nothing better than a hot drink after spending time outside, so whether you like a morning coffee or an afternoon brew, you’re in luck. Just bring your camping kettle and pop it on the top of the wood burner for a hot cuppa in no time. Just listen out for the whistle!

Glamping with a wood burning stove in Windermere

Premium Landpod and bell tents in the grounds of YHA Windermere

YHA Windermere is home to a whole host of glamping and camping options, from pitch-up camping to quirky airstreams. If you want to glamp with a wood burning stove in Windermere, then opt to stay in a tipi, premium Landpod, or a bell tent.

Bell tents and tipis are perfect for families looking to sleep under canvas without the hassle of putting up their own tents. There’s no need to pack the car full of your camping gear or try to keep the kids occupied while you struggle with camping pegs and guide ropes.

Wake up to views over the largest lake in England before planning an activity day on the water. Of course, the best way to enjoy a trip to Windermere is by getting out on the lake. Stay dry with a motor boat or rowing boat, go paddling on a kayak or canoe, or go all in and go wild swimming. YHA Windermere is also the only hostel with a premium Landpod, so this is your chance to stay somewhere truly unique. These half-pod, half-tent structures are ready-made for glamping and sleep up to two people. They also have a wood burner to keep you warm in the cooler months and a canopy roof that can be raised up so you can get even closer to nature.

Bell tents with log burners in Hawkshead

Bell tent with log burner

For a bell tent with a log burner, head to YHA Hawkshead, just outside one of the most picturesque villages in the Lake District. The stunning grade II listed hostel is surrounded by breath-taking natural scenery, and there are walks for every ability right from the doorstep. If you prefer a chilled-out day of sightseeing, rather than an adrenaline-fuelled hike, there are plenty of tourist attractions right on the doorstep.

The author and illustrator Beatrix Potter lived at the nearby Hill Top House, which is now open to the public. There are plenty of other attractions around here dedicated to this famous children’s author. There are also quirky shops to explore and plenty of pubs for an afternoon pint.

The bell tents here offer all the fun of sleeping in the great outdoors without the set-up. Each one sleeps up to five people in a double bed, two single beds, and a single futon, so they’re perfect for families or groups of friends on an activity break. There’s a village of 10 bell tents here, so you can book multiple tents if you’d like to travel as a larger group. Glamping guests can use all of the hostel’s facilities, including the self-catering kitchen and the toilets and showers.

Bell tents come with log burners and a free pack of wood for your first fire. There’s also a fire pit outside if you prefer to stay al fresco. In addition to the bell tents, YHA Hawkshead also has festival-style tipis. These sleep up to four people on futon beds, and all bedding is included, so there’s no need to pack your sleeping bags.

If you love camping but don’t like roughing it, then tipis are the perfect option. They have comfy waterproof bean bags for you to chill out on during the day and a wood burning stove to keep you cosy after your adventures in the Lake District.

Glamping with a log burner in Grasmere

A tipi in the grounds of YHA Grasmere

Head to one of the Lake District’s prettiest villages with a glamping stay at YHA Grasmere Butharlyp Howe which offers festival-style tipis for overnight accommodation.

The hostel and glampsite is just a two-minute walk away from the village which has an array of fantastic restaurants, cosy pubs, and independent shops. At the end of your day pottering around the village, grab some of the famous Grasmere gingerbread to enjoy with a cuppa back at your tipi. And, speaking of a cuppa, you can brew up on your integrated wood burner inside the tent.

If you want to spend your time in the Lake District exploring the great outdoors, then there’s no better base for this than YHA Grasmere Butharlyp Howe. There are countless walks straight from the glamping site, including Silver Howe, an easy five-mile route with incredible views over Grasmere and the central fells. If you’re more of a mermaid than a walker, there are many options for wild swimming nearby.

Grasmere is one of the smallest and shallowest lakes in the area. It’s a great choice if you’re worried about the cold, as the water will be slightly warmer than some of the larger lakes. The water is calm and clear, with a mountain backdrop making for a stunning wild swimming experience.

For a more secluded swim, head to the nearby Loughrigg Tarn. This small tarn is lesser-known, so there’s every chance you’ll have a private swim here in the shadow of the magnificent Langdale Pikes. You can walk or cycle to get to the tarn, and there’s a pub nearby where you can grab a post-swim drink. After spending the day outdoors, return to your tipi to warm up in front of the log burner. Hang up your wet kit, and it’ll be ready for more adventures tomorrow.
