The explorer’s guide to adventure activities in the UK

Cycling

Whether you have an adventurous spirit or would like to go searching for one, you don’t have to travel outside the UK as there’s plenty to captivate your imagination. The UK is a great destination for a variety of challenging and fun activities, set amongst some unbelievable natural wonders that are definitely worth exploring today.  Let YHA help you find your next unforgettable getaway with our helpful guide to adventure activities in the UK.

Sky high

If you would like to test your disposition towards heights and take in one of the most breath-taking views, then get yourself to Cumbria’s Via Ferrata adventure. It’s a series of steel ladders and bridges that have been drilled into the rockface; the route follows that of Victorian miners, leading you to the summit of Fleetwith Pike. There are two options to choose from, regular and ‘Xtreme’ which aim to challenge and inspire in different ways. The first one is suitable to everyone over the age of 10 whilst the latter requires a little more fitness and a brave attitude. Whichever adventure you choose, expect it to last for around 3 hours as you’ll be clipped to a mountain by cable and expertly guided by the company’s staff. For a comfortable stay in the local area, check out a host of affordable options from YHA.

Ride the waves

There’s nothing quite like mastering the art of surfing and finally riding your first wave successfully. But did you know you can do it without leaving the UK? Take a trip to North Yorkshire for the opportunity to try out surfing thanks to the Saltburn-on Sea’s beginner waves. The vibe is friendly, even when the water gets busy, and it’s a great place to try out the activity and see if it’s for you. Staff at the Saltburn Surf School will be able to help with all beginner training, as well as kit so you don’t have to worry about anything but getting up on the board.

Up in the air

Have you ever wondered what it feels like to fly? Well, you can find out by traveling to Surrey and giving paragliding a go. It’s suitable for all ages, though under 18s will need parental permission, and is possibly a once in a lifetime opportunity to feel as free as a bird. No skills or experience are required if you book in for a tandem flight, letting a highly experienced instructor direct you through the open skies. Duration of a flight is always determined by weather conditions with safety being the main priority and on good days you’ll soar to 500ft above the Surrey countryside with green rolling hills beneath your feet. Only 8 miles from Croydon, you have the option of having a city break in London or making your flying experience part of a countryside weekend; whatever you decide, YHA has your accommodation covered.

Find your food

We’re so used to popping into a shop to pick up a snack or doing the weekly shop and seeing fruit and veg neatly stacked in its packaging. Wild Food UK wants you to forget about all that and go on a food adventure, foraging for varying tasty morsels so you can re-discover what it means to eat real food. The courses, available across multiple locations across the UK, are suitable for all ages (under 12s go free!), aiming to help identify edible shoots, flowers, mushrooms and more. At the end, the items you gather are cooked into a delicious meal to finish off the educational and entertaining course. It’s a really great way to learn and eat something new!
