Officially founded by the Romans in 71 AD, this peculiar place takes the crown when it comes to ancient history. Scared beside the seaside

Lightening over the Whitby Abbey

Eerie surroundings, vampires and abbeys. Bram Stoker’s Dracula sent shivers down the spines of many, which was set in the heart of coastal town, Whitby. It’s quirky cobbled streets and quaint cottages have helped it become one of the most well-known gothic hotspots of the UK. A quiet fishing town by day. By night, be prepared to be sucked into a whirlwind of ghostly apparitions, silent whispers and mysterious lighthouses.

Discover past stories of saints, poets and Dracula as you explore the striking ruins of Whitby Abbey. Witness as the building becomes bathed in dramatic illuminations while watching the story of the count come to life, from Friday 21st to Monday 31st October. If it’s a family affair, bring your little monsters to the abbey during half term. Follow creepy clues and meet costumed performers to hear all about strange goings on.

If sinister strolls are more your thing, join Dr Crank on a 75-minute eerie extravaganza of supernatural tales surrounding murder, mystery and suspense. Or head down the coast to Robin Hood’s Bay for a journey through secret snickets and alleyways as you listen to whispers of folklore, legend, smuggling and shipwrecks on Halloween and the days leading up to it.

Over the past 2000 years, Chester has been home to many moments in history. From the Roman invasion of Britain and Anglo-Saxton warriors to the industrial revolution, this place has seen plenty of haunted happenings.
