As we’re now amid Student Volunteering Week, we wanted to hear from our own dedicated volunteers about their experiences. We caught up with university students, Christopher Peach and Hannah Hughes, to discover how volunteering at YHA has shaped their life skills and future prospects.

How, and why, did you first get into volunteering?

Hannah: “Due to my natural desire to support people and good causes, I have always been interested in the idea of volunteering. I was keen to gain experiences outside of my degree, so I applied to the YHA youth advisory role. Since taking on this role, I’ve become incredibly passionate about volunteering, and I’m currently leading a charity project in my workplace.”

Christopher: “It’s really important to offer commitment to charities as an act of vocation, where I can learn life skills and boost my employability.”

Which projects have you been involved in at YHA?

Hannah: “During my two years as a youth advisor, I worked closely on the Generation Green project — an initiative providing 115,000 opportunities to connect young people to nature. I’m currently working on a project to encourage more young people from different groups to come together to socialise, enjoy the outdoors and have fun.”

Christopher: “As a volunteer team leader at YHA Edale, I’ve supported with outdoor activity planning and enrichment for children on summer camp programmes. I have contributed to sustainability and youth workshops, while also helping to paint and decorate at the YHA Brecon Beacons Danywenallt working party.”

What are the benefits to students of taking part in volunteering?

Hannah: “It allows you to meet a range of people from different backgrounds, helping you to gain key people skills. I’ve gained so much confidence in myself since joining the volunteering community here. Not only that, but volunteering can open many doors to other exciting career opportunities.”

What skills have you developed?

Hannah: “Volunteering at YHA has allowed me to build on my people, teamwork and confidence skills.”

Christopher: “I’ve enhanced my teamwork, leadership and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to relate to others in shared values and ethos at YHA.”

How do you feel volunteering has improved your employability?

Hannah: “I now stand out to employers, as during interviews I have been able to reference experiences I’ve had while volunteering. Choosing to volunteer with charities that I’m passionate about has given me the opportunity to demonstrate who I am, and what my values are.”

Christopher: “It’s a real benefit to see how a national charity works. I’ve had the chance to meet many new people and expand my skill set which will be transferable to future roles.”
