My apprenticeship journey with YHA

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, I wanted to reflect on my time as an apprentice at YHA. I started my Operations Management Apprenticeship Level 5 in October 2021, due to complete this September.

I decided on an apprenticeship as I knew how important they were for enhancing employability prospects. By focusing on operations management, I’ve gained insight into all aspects of the organisation, which has given me a well-rounded knowledge of YHA. The role is incredibly varied — sometimes I cover hostel manager shifts over multiple sites including YHA London Lee Valley and YHA Brighton. Each day, I support in making sure that we run the business operations effectively, including roles such as labour forecasting, maintenance and managing others.

This apprenticeship has given me the chance to take learning outside the classroom, while also revolving around my work schedule. Not only do I develop key life skills such as communication, teamwork and relationship building, but I learn all about various management tools and workplace theories through my studies. From online training, webinars and self-study to workplace activities, each day is different — and this variety is what keeps it so interesting.

For my end-point assessment, I have to provide a portfolio of workplace evidence, as well as a professional discussion with an external evaluator. I’m working on preparing a business plan for this evaluation, which has the potential to be implemented into the YHA network. This assessment will allow me to demonstrate all I’ve learnt during my apprenticeship, plus show how I can plan a project that addresses a business need.

It’s fantastic to have the support from YHA while completing my apprenticeship — my manager, plus the HR and Learning team have all been incredibly encouraging. Not forgetting my HIT trainer, who I meet each month for professional discussions on topics such as finance and communication. This apprenticeship has helped me refine my skills including self-management, decision making and interpersonal abilities. The knowledge learnt during my apprenticeship is not only useful in my work life, but also help me develop on an individual level.

There are plenty of reasons why apprenticeships are a great option. From gaining hands-on experience and enhancing essential work and personal skills to gaining industry-recognised qualifications, it’s a no brainer for those looking to combine practical learning with theory.
