So what’s the secret to a champion conker? A swill in vinegar, a flash bake in the oven, a coating of PVA? No cheating here, we like a fair fight. If you’ve the patience of a saint, you can put this year’s crop away to harden for next but we say just go for it – let’s get cracking with some practise.

The horse chestnut tree isn’t indigenous to the UK and is rarely found in woodland. Instead, hunt out champion conkers in parks, public gardens and village greens. Have fun!
