Go nuts for horse chestnuts

You may not be aware but the World Conker Championships take place on 13/10/2019 in Southwick, Northamptonshire (nearest hostels: YHA Thurlby and YHA Cambridge).

So what’s the secret to a champion conker? A swill in vinegar, a flash bake in the oven, a coating of PVA? No cheating here, we like a fair fight. If you’ve the patience of a saint, you can put this year’s crop away to harden for next but we say just go for it – let’s get cracking with some practise.

Where to find them:
The horse chestnut tree isn’t indigenous to the UK and is rarely found in woodland. Instead, hunt out champion conkers in parks, public gardens and village greens. Have fun!
