Why YHA and walking are a perfect match

There are some things that just go together. Fish and chips, rock and roll, YHA and walking. There’s no need to travel far and wide, or break the bank, for a stunning walking holiday. We know how important walking is on so many levels, from the wellbeing benefits to community spirit. Here’s why a stay with YHA goes hand-in-hand with an unforgettable walking adventure.

Unbeatable locations

Milestone YHA Broadhaven

From the mighty mountains of the Lakes to the simple solitude of South East shores, there are plenty of hostels based in some of England and Wales’ most breath-taking beauty spots. As mentioned in ITV’s ‘Britain’s Favourite Walks: Top 100’ show, Helvellyn took the top spot for its beautifully rugged landscape and rigged edges. Following close behind were walks in Buttermere, Ambleside and Coniston — all of which are on the doorstep of many YHA Lakes locations.

If coastal spots are more your thing, there’s plenty to pick from. Stride along the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path or trek across the gorgeous Gower peninsula when staying in a Welsh hostel. Or satisfy your wanderlust by wandering across sparkling Devon shores or shell-scattered Norfolk beaches.

Pocket-friendly breaks

YHA Sheringham

Getting away for a walking trip doesn’t have to cost the Earth. Staying in hostels can be a great way to travel on a budget, offering affordable prices with handy facilities. Whether you want to stay in a dorm or hunker down in a private room, there are plenty of accommodation options to suit your budget.

Many of our hostels have a fully licensed bar area, where you can enjoy some tasty dishes from our full menu. From delicious fish and chips to hearty lasagnes and indulgent hot chocolates, there’s something to suit all tastes. Most of our locations have self-catering kitchens, so you can save your pennies on eating out by whipping up something tasty at the hostel. Or you can fill up before a long day’s ramble with our unlimited breakfast offer.

These kinds of staycations also contribute towards sustainable travel. As we have lots of hostels across England and Wales, you’ll never be too far away from a YHA, so why not travel locally by public transport and reduce your air miles.

Great for your wellbeing

At YHA, we know how much of a positive impact being outside and reconnecting with nature can have on your mental wellbeing. Whether its a 10 minute wander around your local park or a challenging hike in the mountains, walking is a fantastic way to un-wind, focusing on both your physical and mental health. We have plenty of self-guided maps for you to download to get you started on your adventures.

Feel part of a community

YHA Walks Hartington

At YHA, everyone is welcome. We believe hostelling is about people. So whether that be our friendly staff or fabulous guests we welcome through our doors each week, you’re sure to meet new and interesting people when staying here. We love being part of our local communities, and invite people to pop by our hostel cafes for a cuppa or a slice of cake while enjoying a walk. Local groups can also gather together in our meeting rooms, or if you want to get involved in our day-to-day, why not try volunteering with us?

Many of our guests have a shared love for the outdoors, which creates a strong sense of community — whether that be sharing maps with fellow guests or telling tales of walking adventures when cosied up by the fire.

Take part in our Festival of Walking

YHA Walks Hartington

Last year, we launched our first ever Festival of Walking, which brought together people from all different backgrounds to celebrate the joy of walking. As part of the festival, we hosted social walks, challenge events, free cuppas at our hostels and our volunteers mapped out plenty of self-led walks with downloadable maps.

Fancy taking part this year? From 3rd September – 19th October, we’re offering  20% off accommodation at many amazing hostels across England and Wales during the festival. Or you can take on one of our self-guided walks from one of our hostels or get involved as part of a group on a guided social walk. Can we tempt you with a free cuppa and cake?
