Perhaps Nottinghamshire’s best known attraction, Sherwood Forest is the legendary domain of Robin Hood and is great for enjoying woodland walks, nature spotting and enjoying the majesty of the historic Major Oak.
Here are some interesting facts about Sherwood Forest:
1. There has been a forest in Sherwood, near Nottingham, for many thousands of years. It used to be bigger than it is today, but even now it has more than 1,000 ancient oak trees.
2. If you come here, you can expect to find lots of wildlife, too. Woodpeckers, hedgehogs, deer and even glow-worms can be seen here at different times of year.
3. It’s best known for its links with Robin Hood, the famous outlaw who stole from the rich and gave to the poor. We don’t know for sure whether Robin was a real person, but one special tree in the forest is said to be where he slept and sheltered. We call this tree the Major Oak.
Go! Whether you want to spot animals, explore the woodland trails or follow in the footsteps of Robin Hood, YHA Sherwood Forest is well placed for you to have your own adventure.
