Every September, Hostelling International (HI) celebrate the United Nations’ International Day of Peace with their inspiring ‘Say HI! For Peace’ campaign, which highlights how peace blossoms from mutual respect and understanding. HI aims to unite people from all corners of the globe through a celebration of travel and the blending of different cultures. YHA wants to celebrate being part of HI and when you become a YHA member you automatically become a member of HI too. This means you can access 2,650 hostels in 57 destinations.
YHA was created in 1930 to unlock the possibility of overnight travel for all. Poor air quality and cramped housing was the reality for many in the early twentieth century and YHA wanted to give young working people the chance to escape from the harsh conditions of inner-city life and venture into the open countryside for some much-needed leisure time. Now, we offer great-value accommodation for different groups of people so they can experience all that hostelling has to offer. Whether you’re a social group or a bunch of friends getting together, we have unique locations, activity packages and tasty catering options.
We believe it’s important for the next generation to connect with nature and understand the importance of self-care, whilst also looking after our environment. Hostelling is perfect for both eco-friendly travel and creating relationships with fellow travellers. YHA often hosts unforgettable educational residentials at our hostels, which encourage the nurturing of peace through education. Our ‘Connecting to Nature’ package available to school residentials gives students the opportunity to take part in nature-based activities, whilst developing mindfulness skills.
Our hostels have a unique environment where cultures merge, connections flourish and people from all walks of life come together and create a shared sense of community. Whether you’re looking to live in the present, disconnect to reconnect, or immerse yourself in culture, YHA hostels have got you covered. Read on to find out why our hostels are ideal for channelling your inner peace and are great locations for peaceful retreats in the UK…
Live in the present
Why not escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life with a peaceful getaway at a YHA hostel? Escape to the countryside where you’ll be surrounded by the soft rustling of leaves, joyful chirping of birds and fresh smells of the environment. Slow down, take in our country’s natural beauty, recharge your drained batteries and gain a new perspective on life. Whether you want to explore hidden gems or put your feet up with a cup of tea, our hostels are ideal for rejuvenation and self-care.
There’s a common misconception that inner peace and the luxury of travel is expensive, but YHA is dedicated to keeping prices affordable. We want to make sure that as many people as possible have the opportunity to experience adventure and explore the great outdoors. Our hostels are more than just a place to rest your head, though; they are environments where you can connect with like-minded travellers, share stories and learn about different cultures.
Many YHA hostels have an array of shared facilities such as, lounges, kitchens, outdoor gardens, games rooms, restaurants and bars. Whether you’re a social butterfly or someone who enjoys their own company, these communal spaces offer comfort and friendship.
If you’re looking to escape to the countryside, you can find us in national parks and at the bottom of mountains. We recommend YHA Snowdon Pen-y-Pass, YHA New Forest and YHA Hartington Hall.
Disconnect to reconnect
If you’re looking to unplug from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, lock your phone away in a drawer and log out from receiving endless notifications, YHA hostels can provide that escape. In our digital world, it’s important to recharge your batteries, be present in the moment and embrace nature’s calming presence. Find your inner peace through the simplicity of our natural world and take part in mindful activities, geared to bring peace of mind and relaxation.
If you really want to unplug from the digital world, staying in a hostel environment is the perfect opportunity to do so. Our friendly and welcoming staff are equipped with brilliant tips and recommendations for guests. Whether you’re interested in local attractions, popular walks or yummy restaurants, we’ve got you covered. Immerse yourself in the culture and customs of the new area you’re visiting, and you’re bound to learn something new about the region and probably yourself.
Hostel atmospheres are unlike any other, as they’re full of like-minded individuals who are open and curious to meet new people. Say hello to your hostel roommates or introduce yourself to someone relaxing in a social space, and who knows what could happen! Pass on travel tips to newcomers or learn about the local area from regular visitors.
If you’re looking for a hostel off the beaten track for a digital detox, we recommend YHA Black Sail, YHA Skiddaw Bunkhouse or YHA Ilam Hall.
Cultural immersion
Whilst travel allows you to visit new places and hidden gems across the country, it also encourages you to learn about different cultures, ways of life and areas. From Bakewell tarts to Cornish pasties, you’ll get the opportunity to taste new culinary delights, and every conversation is a chance to learn something new.
To find your inner peace, we would also recommend living a simple life. Try minimalistic packing, as less clutter results in a clearer mind. Trust us, you’ll appreciate them more afterwards! Who needs an iPad when you can start conversations with fellow travellers?
Every area of England and Wales has different customs and quirks that are specific to the location. By visiting new regions, individuals foster a sense of acceptance, understanding and open-mindedness. In hostels, these experiences are magnified as you meet and interact with travellers from all walks of life, and all across the country, even the world. Mingling with others teaches you to change your opinions and alter your perspectives.
Learning from others is one of the most enriching aspects of travel and our hostels offer a space where tolerance, empathy and understanding are not just encouraged but celebrated. Embracing diversity rather than fearing it allows for deeper connections and a further sense of inner peace.
YHA hostels are based in cultural cities and historic towns. If you’d like to embrace and learn about different cultures and heritage, we recommend YHA Bath, YHA Manchester, YHA London Central or YHA Liverpool Albert Dock.
