Nordic Walking joins YHA’s Festival of Walking

Earlier this year, British Nordic Walking was thrilled to be invited by to join their annual Festival of Walking held throughout September and October. With a theme centred around building confidence and know-how in outdoor activities, we saw a perfect opportunity to introduce Nordic Walking to a wider audience. Embracing the YHA’s call, our instructors geared up to lead four unique walks across the UK, offering participants a blend of physical activity, stunning landscapes, and a taste of Nordic Walking’s benefits.

Introducing Nordic Walking to new walkers

Each walk was designed as a “have a go” session, giving participants a welcoming, low-pressure environment to try out Nordic Walking under the guidance of our experienced instructors. The walks introduced the basics of INWA Nordic Walking, focusing on technique and movement, while participants got to experience the joy and unique rhythm of walking with poles in beautiful settings, under the watchful eye of our experienced instructors.

Our walk leaders selected routes that showcased the best of their respective locations, with preparatory reconnaissance walks ensuring smooth, safe, and enjoyable sessions. As we set off with our groups, there was excitement and curiosity in the air. Along the way, the camaraderie of the walkers grew, with each participant mastering their technique, discovering the “power of poleambulation” (as one of our instructors so eloquently put it), and getting a sense of why so many people are hooked on Nordic Walking.

A glimpse into our four adventures

In the Wye Valley, one instructor led a 10km circular route on a sunny Saturday morning in September. This YHA hostel, perched high on the valley wall with sweeping views of the River Wye below, is a gem worth visiting. As walkers practiced their Nordic technique, they were treated to sights of canoeists drifting along the river, pockets of late summer sunlight filtering through the trees, and breathtaking views of the distant Brecon Beacons and Malverns. The setting was as rewarding as the walk itself, leaving a lasting impression on our new Nordic Walkers. This group boasted the youngest walker of the four walks we led; with 9-year old Tilly, thoroughly enjoying the adventure of negotiating woodland obstacles and perfecting her Nordic technique so ably. It’s fair to say that this particular walk was blessed with amazing weather and a very chatty group, who we are sure will go on to share many future adventures together.

Meanwhile, across the River Severn, close to YHA Bristol, another group set off from the Georgian elegance of Queen’s Square in Bristol, navigating the historic streets and famous waterfront. This city walk offered something unique—a mix of urban exploration and history as walkers encountered iconic sights and even a Banksy along the way. Bristol is a welcoming city when it comes to alternative forms of fitness and we know from the ground based in the area, Nordic Walking is extremely popular with many people of all ages!

Up north, the riverside of York’s River Ouse became the backdrop for another Nordic Walking session, setting off from YHA York. The peaceful scenery provided the perfect setting for newcomers to familiarise themselves with the rhythm and technique of pole walking.

Finally, towards the tail-end of the YHA’s month-long Festival of Walking, on the scenic contours of the North Downs Way in Kent, our walkers were treated to rolling views and a chance to master Nordic Walking on varied terrain; under the watchful eye of our instructor who had recently returned from Everest Base Camp…all completed with his trusted Nordic Walking poles. YHA Canterbury was their base – a Victorian villa, perfectly located to explore the cathedral city and its surroundings. Canterbury offers so much with its history, culture, beaches, ancient woodlands, and the Kent Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
This diversity of locations underscored the versatility of both the hostel venues and Nordic Walking itself. As an activity for both natural trails and cityscapes alike.

An enthusiastic response from our walkers

Throughout the festival, it was wonderful to see how quickly all participants adapted to using the poles, and they soon began to appreciate the unique fitness benefits Nordic Walking offers. The sense of achievement was visible, as were the smiles and laughter. By the end of each walk, our groups had not only gained confidence with the poles but also enjoyed the shared experience of exploring new places with like-minded walkers. As our instructor John noted, “after a very short time, not only did they master the rudiments, but became converts to the power of poleambulation.” With each of the walks we led, we found that the physical benefits (all-over body workout; increased mobility and walking pace), as well as the sense of achievement, as one lady put-it… “I wanted to try something that I’d heard of, but hadn’t really had the opportunity…it was great to ‘give-it-a-go!’”

Thanks to YHA – cheers to next year

Of course, no walk is complete without some post-adventure relaxation, and YHA generously provided refreshments after each session. Who doesn’t love a piece of cake? These were much appreciated, giving walkers and instructors alike a chance to unwind, share stories, and reflect on the overall experience.

We’re excited to have introduced so many new people to Nordic Walking and hope to return next year to introduce even more people to this engaging, health-boosting activity. Nordic Walking offers a unique combination of fitness, nature, and social connection, and it’s fantastic to see more people discovering its benefits. Whether you’re looking to improve your fitness, enjoy the outdoors, or meet new people, Nordic Walking is for everyone. The poles help you ‘go further’.
