If you’ve never tried a family holiday with YHA, it’s time to find out what you’re missing. Our hostels are more family-friendly than ever before, offering unique on-site adventures that kids will love. Our range of affordable breaks will help introduce your loved ones to amazing experiences for less. Take a look at some of our favourites…

Escape to the countryside

Need to burn off some steam and forget urban stress? Play with your children in the fresh air and enjoy the great outdoors with a Peak District getaway. This area is ideal for walking and cycling holidays and there are lots of enchanting tourist attractions like caverns and castles to discover. YHA Castleton Losehill Hall has ample room for little ones and beautiful gardens to explore – it even runs kids activities every morning in the school holidays.

Gothic manor YHA Ilam Hall has an impressive games room with pool table, ping-pong and table football, while YHA Hartington Hall has cute farm animals and an adventure playground especially for kids. If you’re feeling brave, Alton Towers is near our Peak District hostels and guarantees a memorable day out.

For woodland adventurers, YHA Sherwood Forest is near the thrilling Go Ape and the winding cycle tracks and trails of Sherwood Pines Country Park. YHA National Forest is perfect for budget breaks and families get a discount for Conkers – an award-winning attraction next to the hostel with indoor and outdoor play areas.

If you yearn for a magical seaside holiday, YHA Boggle Hole has a beach on its doorstep and lots of pirate-themed fun including magical trails and dressing up boxes.

Go exploring in a city

Whether you’re being wowed by the Science Museum or hiding behind your children at the London Dungeon, you’ll never forget a trip to the capital. We have lots of hostels in London. From city centre locations such as YHA London Central to quieter areas such as YHA London Lee Valley, you have plenty of choice.

If your family’s thirsty for knowledge, explore the museums and have a go at punting near YHA Cambridge – this stylish hostel’s university-themed décor will impress even the most cynical of teens.

YHA York is uber- popular with families, boasting 32 en-suite rooms, an IT suite and even an archery range. York is unrivalled for history and budding archaeologists will be spoilt for choice with the unique Jorvik Viking Centre, a blood-chilling ghost trail and York Dungeons.

Top tips for hostelling as a family

Need some advice to make YHA stays with your little ones go smoothly? Like all guests, remember to bring everyone’s towels and toiletries – these aren’t provided in most YHA bathrooms. Also, check whether you’re staying at a hostel that does meals. You can always bring food along and prepare a yummy feast in our self-catering kitchens. Did we mention that kids under 10 eat free?

Browse the facilities icons on our website’s hostel pages and look out for family-friendly features like cots and en-suite rooms. Fancy something different? We also have our glamping options where you can spend the night under the stars.

Once the little ones are tucked up for the night, you’ll have to settle down in your room too, so grab a book to read in bed, a pack of cards or a game to play.
