YHA Consiton Coppermines
A venue that combines a remote mountain setting with a cosy, rural atmosphere, tucked amongst the foothills of the Old Man of Coniston, YHA Coniston Coppermines is the perfect spot for a winter retreat with friends and family. As well as giving you a 500ft head start on your ascent to the summit of the Old Man of Coniston, there are plenty of activity centres dotted around for people interested in boating, climbing or water sports in general. There are six bedrooms that sleep up to 27 people in this hostel which was originally the home of the manager of the old copper mines. Only a short walk away is Coniston village, with great local pubs to hunker down in after wandering around Coniston Water, or you could visit the Ruskin Museum to find out all about the Ruskin collection, the copper mines, slate, geology, farming and Donald Campbell’s Bluebird.
YHA Eskdale
This peaceful riverside hostel is located on 15 acres of land and surrounded by the stunning Lake District hills. With eight bedrooms that sleep up to 35 guests and beautiful countryside views, it’s a relaxing getaway. YHA Eskdale is a tranquil haven with so much to enjoy — waterfalls, rivers, fells, wildlife, paddleboarding on nearby Wast Water, and there’s the added bonus of being within walking distance of a cosy pub. You could also head along to the ancient Hardknott Roman Fort, or walk along the River Esk and take a refreshing dip in the turquoise plunge pools found at several points along the length of it.
