Exploring the beauty and breadth of England and Wales on two wheels is a great way to spend quality time together as a family. But finding the routes suitable for all ages and abilities can be tricky, so that’s why we have put together a guide of family friendly cycle routes across England and Wales.
The Camel Trail
Families love the Camel Trail. Following a former railway line for 18 miles and passing through the gorgeous Cornish countryside, this cycle path is easy-going and flat, meaning it’s the perfect family friendly cycle route for those who have mastered two-wheel riding or for those carrying precious loads.
You can get onto the cycle trail from Padstow, Wadebridge and Bodmin, so take your pick.

The Torver Trail
Next up is a six miler – Torver Trail in the Lake District. Coniston originally had its own railway line which was abandoned in 1958. Parts of the train track have been converted to a cycle path, suitable for even the little ones. The trail passes rolling fells and enchanted forests. Make sure to spot the mighty mountain ranges in the distance.
You can access the cycle path alongside the glorious shores of Coniston Water – an idyllic beauty spot in the Lakes.

The Tissington Trail
The Peak District National Park has an extensive cycle network, including the Tissington Trail. You and your loved ones can cycle through glorious Derbyshire Dales landscapes and enjoy the pretty views. This 13-mile trail is relatively flat, making it the perfect family friendly cycle route for everyone to enjoy. Why not stop of in the quaint village of Tissington? There are plenty of benches to sit and relax and tuck into your packed lunch.
You can access the cycle trail from the popular market town of Ashbourne.

Lon Las Peris
Lon Las Peris is in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park. This route is just under a mile, flat and the ideal ride for those looking to explore the area. From Llanberis, along the stunning shore of Llyn Padarn to the small village of Brynrefail, there are splendid views of Snowdon, magical woodland and the glistening lakes.
Closest YHA: YHA Snowdon Pen-y-Pass
York Solar System Cycleway
Last but not least is the York Solar System Cycleway in York. This is a popular favourite with families as it’s a flat 6.4-mile scale model of the Solar System. We recommend starting at the Pluto End at village of Riccal of the A19 south and make your way to the Sun, just on the outskirts of the city. The planet models which are positioned along different parts of the cycle route provide out-of-this-world motivation to complete the route.
So, if you’re looking for a fun-filled family cycling trip with a universe lesson, make sure to planet!
