Dog owners can take advantage of our range of dog-friendly youth hostels that offer camping pods, cabins, tipis, bell tents and pitch-up camping facilities in their grounds.
Dogs are charged at £5 per night when using YHA’s pods, cabins, tipis and bell tents, however, there is no additional charge for dogs where owners choose to bring their own tents and use the pitch up facilities available.
1. YHA Grinton Lodge
Richmond, North Yorkshire, DL11 6HS
Situated on the southern slopes of Swaledale, YHA Grinton Lodge is surrounded by stunning scenery and exceptional views of the Yorkshire Dales.
YHA Grinton Lodge‘s camping area is in a fantastic location with gorgeous views over Swaledale and the village of Reeth. The campsite itself is large with space for up to eight pitches and is suitable for organised group holidays as well as family breaks.
There are lots of routes throughout the Yorkshire Dales National Park for varying abilities. The area is full of striking landscapes to explore. The traditional limestone barns and wildflower meadows contrast with the rugged beauty of the old mine workings. The Youth Hostel is just a 10 minute walk from the village of Grinton which has a cosy pub and a small church.
You can choose to pitch up your own tent or spend a night in a heated camping pod which sleeps up to four people and includes bedding.
2. YHA Manorbier
Pembrokeshire, Wales, SA70 7TT
The YHA Manorbier campsite is a level field close to both the car park and the Youth Hostel. The field is surrounded by trees, hedges, willows and even a wildlife meadow and has stunning sea views. The campsite is peaceful and serene with plenty of space for children to play. Staying on the YHA Manorbier campsite means you get the best of both worlds – a great outdoor experience with all the superb new hostel facilities.
YHA Manorbier has heated camping pods that sleep up to four people and include beds and bedding as well as having their own decked area.
3. YHA Borrowdale
Keswick, Cumbria, CA12 5XE
If you like camping, you’ll love the wooden camping pods at YHA Borrowdale which sleep up to three people and include bedding. Each pod has its own individual decking area – perfect for a disposable BBQ.
This lakeland Youth Hostel boasts a fabulous valley location with fine mountain scenery and a warm, informal atmosphere. The hostel is a longstanding Lake District favourite, a recommended stop on Wainwright’s Coast to Coast and choc-a-bloc with walking routes right from its doorstep. There is no better place for climbing Scafell Pike, Great Gable and Bowfell. However, size isn’t everything and the more lowly Castle Crag will leave you with an enduring memory of the beauty and atmosphere of the Lake District. Catbells, Walla Crag and walks along the River Derwent are favourites.
In addition to the cabins, there is room for campers to pitch up and sleep comfortably.
4. YHA Hawkshead
Ambleside, Cumbria, LA22 0QD
Campers are spoilt for choice at YHA Hawkshead in the Lake District. Choose from tipis, camping pods, cabins or pitch up your own tent. The YHA Hawkshead campsite is situated in the Victorian kitchen garden, surrounded by woodland with a stream running alongside the site.
The spacious tipis are fully kitted out with bedding and can sleep four people. They have a wooden floor which is partly carpeted and a lockable coffee table chest which you can store your belongings in and use as a table. There’s also eco-friendly solar lighting and two comfy waterproof bean bags for you to chill out on during the day. This cosy glamping option is perfect for those who love camping but not roughing it.
The hostel also offers eight camping pods which sleep between three and four people and cabins, which sleep four or five people comfortably. All include beds and bedding.
5. YHA Stratford-upon-Avon
Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, CV37 7RG
Situated on the rural outskirts of Stratford upon Avon and just four miles from the centre, YHA Stratford-upon-Avon is set in three acres of lovely grounds and offers luxury camping in the form of deluxe pods. Each pod boasts a kitchenette area with fridge, wet room with toilet and shower, and plenty of space for four people to sleep and relax. Each pod also has its own private decking area.
While Stratford upon Avon town centre may not be your pooch’s idea of a good day out, YHA Stratford upon Avon is surrounded by many lovely walking routes. Stride out on foot from the Youth Hostel to discover this beautiful, vibrant town, or take a stroll along the river. Start at the Butterfly Farm and walk towards the Avon to take in views of the theatre and walk along the waterfront. Look across the river for fantastic views of Trinity Church, where Shakespeare’s grave can be found.
6. YHA Castleton Losehill Hall
Hope Valley, Derbyshire, S33 8WB
YHA Castleton Losehill Hall is set in formal gardens and 27 acres of parkland in the heart of the Peak District National Park. There are beautiful gardens, woods and streams to explore within the grounds with one of the peak’s most popular and charming tourist villages on the doorstep. Dogs are welcome in our camping barn.
The youth hostel is close to the spectacular Winnats Pass, Peveril Castle and Mam Tor and is a great base for a superb walking holiday.
7. YHA South Downs
Lewes, East Sussex, BN8 6JS
Looking to get closer to the great outdoors? If so, then the camping pods, which are tucked away in the grounds of YHA South Downs in East Sussex, could be the perfect location for your next family holiday.
The wooden pods sleep up to four people and are heated and include beds, futons and bedding. Each pod also has its own decking area, perfect for having a disposable BBQ on a sunny day.
A converted farmhouse on the South Downs Way, YHA South Downs is a brief walk from Southease railway station and within easy reach of the Sussex towns of Lewes and Newhaven and the sprawling outdoors of the South Downs National Park is right on the doorstep.
8. YHA Beer
Seaton, Devon, EX12 3LL
Devon’s YHA Beer is longstanding and well-regarded but few know that concealed in the surroundings of this striking arts and crafts house are bell tents. The roomy, tipi-like tents can sleep up to five people and are fully kitted out with a double futon-bed and three single futons, all complete with bedding. They also have eco-friendly lighting and cosy bean bags for you to unwind on, as well as bedside tables, a coffee table, rugs and soft flooring.
The Youth Hostel is located on the stunningly beautiful Jurassic coast, now listed as a world heritage site. It’s great for geology, rock pools and fossil hunting, walking and photography. The hostel has private grounds for you to explore and a rich quarry history, populated with local legends about smugglers and pirates.
Campers also have 24-hour access to all of the hostel facilities, including the bar and lounge area should the British weather be at its unreliable best.
9. YHA Lulworth Cove
Wareham, Dorset, BH20 5SA
Keen palaeontologists and geologists will feel at home in Dorset’s YHA Lulworth Cove, tucked away in the county’s countryside and just a mile’s walk from Lulworth Cove, a famous Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. The cove is thought of as one of the best examples of this type of land formation and has been termed as one of the seven natural wonders of England. For walking enthusiasts, the South West Coastal Path passes close by.
Take your own tent and camp by the side of YHA Lulworth Cove and enjoy the views across the fields which surround it. Explore the beautiful Dorset countryside and walk the South West Coast path with its stunning outlook along the Jurassic Coast. Literary walking tours are available at nearby Lyme Regis as well as fossil hunts with experienced guides.
To ensure that all guests have the best experience when staying at dog-friendly youth hostels, YHA has developed a doggy code of conduct which requires dogs to be micro chipped and fully vaccinated to ensure the safety and well-being of other animals and guests. Additionally, owners must keep their pets on a lead at all times, including external areas.
