In 2019, Waitrose & Partners gave YHA a grant of £170,000 to roll out water refill stations across the network to eradicate the use of single use plastic bottles. The refill stations can be used by both residents and non-residents, providing an invaluable service for outdoor lovers. We’ll drink to that!

Each year this saves 500,000 plastic water bottles. It’s just one of a number of schemes to lessen YHA’s environmental impact. Here are a few more…

  • removal of plastic straws and stirrers from our hostels, saving over 100,000 units every year
  • we don’t believe in letting good things go to waste. Since April 2018 we’ve boosted our our on-site recycling by 9%
  • this has saved 888 tonnes of carbon, which is equivalent to –
    • boiling a kettle non stop for 754 months
    • lighting a single 40W bulb for 4,648  years
    • driving from London to Edinburgh 9,978  times
  • you can get 25p off a hot drink when you bring a reusable cup
  • we now have 20 hostels using solar power or other renewable energies. Our hand dryers are making an impact too.

At YHA Ambleside alone, we’re saving over 476,000 paper towels from being used every year.
