Glorious sunshine? Check. The prettiest fishing boats you can find? Check. The UK’s longest National Trail minutes away? Obviously. For a happy marriage of countryside and coast, our Devon hostel YHA Beer is hard to beat. Here’s our top picks of things to do in South Devon this summer.

Celebrate song at Sidmouth Folk Week

First up is Sidmouth Folk Week. This well-established festival attracts a fantastic crowd of revellers. Join a drum circle, get up for a dance, or learn a new skill at a craft workshop. 2022’s line-up includes folk icons like Steeleye Span, plus many emerging talents. With over 700 events, there’s something for everyone.

Hunt for fossils on the Jurassic Coast

There’s nothing more satisfying than finding a fossil on the beach, and our Jurassic Coast is full of them. From Beer’s flinty cliffs, to the fascinating specimens in Lyme Regis Museum, natural history lovers will find plenty to amaze them. Look out for crazy rock formations along the cliffs too.

Go fishing from Beer beach

Not having a harbour hasn’t stopped Beer from being a thriving fishing village – you can try local seafood right on the beach. A great thing to do in South Devon is heading out for a day’s fishing, or hire one of the pretty boats for a day bobbing on the waves. Don’t forget to ask about the local legends of pirates and smugglers! Perfect for families.

Prepare food the South West way

Ever wanted to visit Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage? Their prestigious HQ is less than ten miles away from YHA Beer. You could take a cooking course, stock up on unique produce, or stuff your face with some delicious Devonshire dishes. Oh we’re feeling hungry already.

Get in the sea and go diving

Get close to the wrecks and reefs of Lyme Bay with a scuba lesson. You’ll find turquoise waters and fascinating wildlife without even leaving the UK. Make friends with the fishes, watch the delicately moving reefs, and discover how relaxing scubadiving can be.

Let off steam at Crealy Adventure Park

A great one for kids and big kids alike, the award-winning Crealy Adventure Park has something to delight all ages. Whether you love thrill rides, animals or hilarious live shows, you’re sure to come back with a smile on your face. We love the log flume, Aqua Blasters and exciting Twister roller coaster.

Make a friend at the Donkey Sanctuary

Experience a slower way of life at the much-loved Donkey Sanctuary. You’ll find lots of thought-provoking info about these lovely creatures and there are many chances for a cuddle. A calming, memorable day out (and you can even adopt one if you’ve found yourself a bit in love).

Explore the South West Coast Path

The most popular thing to do in South Devon in summer is the South West Coast Path! We won’t force you to do the whole 630 miles, but YHA Beer is temptingly near this epic route. If you love stunning scenery, walking along this coastal path is a holiday from heaven. We’d recommend bringing a spare memory card for your camera – it’s truly breathtaking here.

Book a stay at YHA Beer

We’re a little biased, but our Arts and Crafts country house makes a gorgeous base to explore Devon. From its light and airy rooms to its sprawling garden, this property is as comfortable as your own home. Sample some of our local beer, or use our BBQ equipment to grill your catch of the day.
