Little town of Conwy has the best of both worlds. Close to beautiful North Wales coastal resorts and the mountains of Snowdonia, the Welsh town is the perfect place for a family break. Here’s our picks of things to do in Conwy.

Plas Mawr

Plas Mawr is characteristic of Conwy’s medieval traditions. Plas Mawr is situated in the heart of the town. Richly decorated, this building is the best-looking surviving town house of the Elizabethan era anywhere in Britain.

Town Walls

Town Walls cover over three quarters of a mile. With over 21 towers and three gateways, this World Heritage site encloses most of the town.

Conwy Castle

Conwy Castle is amongst the greatest surviving medieval fortifications in Great Britain. If you think the outside is impressive, wait until you see the inside. With a great hall, chambers and kitchen, it’s easy to imagine yourself as part of the times. The castle also attracts hundreds of visitors each year.

Quays

The Quays are a great place to spend a few hours. Have a nosy at some of the boats in the harbour or have a little stroll, it’s especially pleasant when the sun is shining. Apparently the pub’s not too bad either!

Conwy Mountain

This is an area of hilly terrain to the west of Conwy. For breath-taking views, this is the place to be. To the north you can see the sea of Conwy Bay and to the south you can see the rest of the Carneddau mountain range.

Quay House

The littlest of abodes was lived in until 1900. Just 3.1 metres high with a floor area of 3.05 by 1.8 metres, the house’s last owner was 6ft 3in fisherman Robert Jones (go figure). Painted bright red, visitors can go inside the house and view the first floor from a step ladder!

Golf Club

For the sporting amongst you, no trip to this Welsh gem would be complete without a trip to the golf club. This must-play 18-hole course on the North Wales coast is playable all year round and has hosted some of the great golfing competitions including, most recently, the European Senior tour event in August 2012.

Aberconwy House

A 14th century merchant’s house – the only medieval one to have survived the turbulent history of the town. With furnished rooms depicting life in the 14th century and an audio-visual presentation, children and adults alike will find this an interesting and educational experience.

The Suspension Bridge

An impressive structure, that comprises an elegant bridge and a toll-keeper’s house. Visitors to the bridge will see how trade and travel infused the town of Conwy with income and learn all about the husband and wife who kept the bridge open every day of the year, come rain or shine.

Harbour Gallery

Dedicated exhibitions and workshops are held throughout the year including upcoming exhibitions by Steven Jones, Ruth Bitowski and an open exhibition for photographers. If you’re a culture vulture then this is the place for you.
